Only Mix The Same ‘Type’ of Leftover Paints When mixing leftover paints to create your custom color, only mix the same “type” of paint together. … You‘ll know when paints aren’t compatible (for example an oil and water-based) because if you try to mix them, you‘ll end up with a lumpy unusable mess.

Mix the paint with a paint stirrer for five minutes or longer. Try brushing the paint onto cardboard to test it out. If the paint can be applied smoothly, then it is still usable.
Insert a wooden or plastic paint paddle into the can and gently stir the contents. If the paint fluids and color seem evenly dispersed, it’s ready to use.
If the paint was mixed and shaken at the store within the past week, stir it lightly. You can use a flat wooden stirring paddle (usually free at the paint store), but one with holes will move through the paint without causing it to spill over the edge of the can.
Paint needs to be shaken and stirred. Before you leave the store where you purchased the paint, they should shake the paint in a machine to ensure that it is mixed properly. Before you start painting, you should also stir the paint. The longer the paint sits, the more you will need to stir it before you begin painting.
The type of finish you choose also affects the color. Flat paint has a chalky appearance in finish, absorbs light, and can make a color look slightly lighter than the swatch color. Glossy paint will typically make a color look darker because the sheen will reflect the light, causing the color to be darker.
As far as the paint settling, yes, it will, even latex. Shake or stir, it’s up to you. BEFORE you do, however, open the lid and make sure there is no “skin” on the top of the paint. If there is, take it out (preferably in one piece) before mixing.
The ceiling should always be painted first. This allows you to effectively cover the surface with at least two coats while not having to worry about any over-spray (the effect of excess paint being sprayed onto the walls) by the roller. When painting the ceiling, you should always use a roller with a double arm frame.

You can mix most other types of paint in the same way as single pack paints. Please always consult the manufacturers technical data sheet prior to use so as you can be sure you are mixing and using the paint correctly.
